Long before the rhythmic beats of Bomba, Plena, or Salsa echoed through the streets of Puerto Rico, the original heartbeat of the island belonged to the Taíno people. This was not a passive culture; it was a deeply vibrant society whose history, spirit, and community came alive through a powerful, synchronized epic dance-song known as the Areyto (or Areíto).
To the Taíno, the Areyto was a living textbook and a sacred celebration combined into one. Since the culture relied on oral storytelling, major historical events—triumphs in battle, lines of succession, ancestral legends, and spiritual devotion—were completely memorized and woven into precise choreography.
